Main Picture - Information
The photograph we’ve used on the CLC 2008 web site and posters shows a red flag being raised above tens of thousands of striking workers in Glasgow's George Square, on Friday 31 January 1919. The workers’ demonstration took place as part of a 40 hours strike taken in favour of shorter working hours as a means of combating unemployment. Events turned violent when police baton charges were resisted by the striking men with broken bottles, iron railings and whatever else was to hand. The day became known as Bloody Friday.
